May update: a breakdown of the announced vinyl culture program

31 May 2024

An overview of the announced artist and speakers, and the schedule per day to date.

The second edition of the Haarlem Vinyl Festival is coming together nicely, with several artists already announced including Cassy, who will be bringing her Talking About My Records show to the Haarlem Vinyl Festival as well as playing at Patronaat. There will also be performances around the city by Anastasia Kristensen, Altīn Gün, Cassy, Colin Benders, Douglas Firs, The Sven Hammond Big Band, Shakedown Tim & the Rhythm Revue, Thrills in +41, and Willem.

The centrally located PHIL is our festival hub from Friday through to Sunday, with lots of program, signing sessions and the Haarlem Record Label Market (HRLM) in the freely accesible PHIL Café and foyer and an extensive vinyl culture program upstairs including listening sessions, gear demonstrations and interactive panel discussions and presentations, accessible for Weekend Pass, Vinyl Culture and day ticket holders, available here.

Classic Albums, live music and the power of design

On HVF Saturday the PHIL will be hosting an appearance by Porcupine Tree founder and studio wizard Steven Wilson with Tim Bowness where the duo will be hosting a live version of The Album Years podcast, while Urban Dance Squad frontman and living legend Rudeboy  - widely regarded as one of the Netherlands' most influential singer/rappers - will be talking about the seminal first LP by Urban Dance Squad on the 35th anniversary of its release. In the Gendering of Vinyl, music academic Karlyn King will be elaborating on her published research on the modern-day record collector and record store. The session 'Why vinyl culture has always been gendered and how to change that' is part of the vinyl culture program at PHIL

The latest speakers to be confirmed include blues guitarist par excellence Leif de Leeuw, who will be playing some of his favourite tracks and, with the help of his guitar, explaining and demonstrating why they mean so much to him and what makes them timeless classics. The power of design will take centre stage when Jeroen van Erp and Robert Muda explain why they are obsessed with the way things look, as well as discussing some of their favourite album covers, and why design is more important than ever if you want to stand out in the modern world.

Women in Vinyl, Excelsior Records and the Sunday Book Club

Women In Vinyl founder and author of the book of the same name Jenn D'Eugenio will be discussing what motivated her to write the comprehensive guide to the world of vinyl, with a focus on empowerment, diversity, and inclusion. As an avid record collector for over two decades, her passion for vinyl records has led her to a career working at record pressing plants to help manufacture the physical product for bands, and major to independent record labels. D'Eugenio is on a mission to both demystify the vinyl community and highlight the vital role women and minority groups play in shaping the industry.

Excelsior Records co-founder Frans Hagenaars will be laying out his vision of what constitutes a good recording and how the studio experience influences how a band sounds in The Art of Recording. Alternative rock specialist Excelsior Records is renowned for the consistency and quality of the recordings made in its two studios, Studio Sound Enterprise and SSE Noord, and Hagenaars will be revealing some of the tricks and hacks he uses to get the best from the groups he works with.

The inaugural Sunday Book Club features Eamonn Forde, an award-winning freelance music business and technology journalist who will be talking about his latest book, 1999: The Year The Record Industry Lost Control, as well as revealing some of his favourite music books of the year. A regular contributor to Music Ally, Music Business Worldwide, The Guardian, IQ, The Quietus and more, his previous books include The Final Days of EMI: Selling The Pig (2019) and Leaving The Building: The Lucrative Afterlife Of Music Estates (2021).
