84-24. 40 jaar Patronaat at Noord-Hollands Archief

The Noord-Hollands Archief will present the exhibition '84-24. 40 Years of Patronaat' at the Janskerk in Haarlem during the Haarlem Vinyl Festival and until November 8, 2024, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Patronaat pop podium. Through photographs, anecdotes, posters, film and music clips from the past 40 years, we take you through the history of this iconic music venue.

Since 1984, Patronaat has been the place in Haarlem where bands, music, and dance find their audience. This means there are 40 years of unique experiences and stories from everyone who has ever been here.
In the '84-24. 40 Years of Patronaat' exhibition, you'll take a trip down memory lane through images, sounds, and archival material from visitors, artists, and (former) staff. You can also listen to music that was once performed live at Patronaat. Visitors can reminisce and experience the love and energy of those who have devoted themselves to music. You'll feel how those involved experienced Patronaat as a warm bath; like a family.

Through the Years
In the exhibition, you'll experience the evolution of Patronaat through different eras. You'll see photos of the old Patronaat, which started in the gymnasium of the former Catholic boys' school on Haarlem's Zijlsingel. Due to its success, the venue outgrew its space, necessitating new construction. During the renovation, Patronaat was accommodated at the Fietsznfabriek on Oostvest. The photos in the exhibition vividly illustrate how Patronaat has transformed over the years from a small stage with 55 concerts and 12,000 visitors in 1984 to one of the Netherlands' largest music venues with more than 500 events and 165,000 visitors in 2023.
In addition to reflecting on performances, artists, and programming, the Noord-Hollands Archief also shows that Patronaat is a breeding ground for talent. A great example of this is the Rob Acda Awards, held annually since 1996. From the beginning, the pop podium has been a place where hundreds of volunteers have devoted themselves to music.

The Patronaat Archive Managed by the Noord-Hollands Archief
This anniversary year of Patronaat brings another special moment. The archive will be managed by the Noord-Hollands Archief. The Noord-Hollands Archief extensively drew on this archive for the exhibition. Not only photos but also posters, videos, personal items, and old tickets are on display alongside beautiful objects.
Jolanda Beyer, director of Patronaat, emphasizes the importance of having the archive managed by the Noord-Hollands Archief: "Haarlem has traditionally been a real music city, with Patronaat as a major driver of pop culture. Everything that has come out of it deserves more than our own dusty attic and the personal archives of the extensive Patro Family. It's truly fantastic that Patronaat's rich history has found a beautiful place at the Noord-Hollands Archief. Not only will it be preserved there, but it will also be shared with the public—a win-win, I'd say!"
Patronaat has proven invaluable for the development of pop music in the Kennemerland region and across the country. Willeke de Groot, director of the Noord-Hollands Archief, explains: "Musical and organizational talent has been and continues to be given the chance to perform and experiment here. By preserving Patronaat's archive, the memories of countless performances and important elements of regional and national pop history are secured."

Het Noord-Hollands Archief laat tijdens het Haarlem Vinyl Festival en t/m 8 november 2024 de tentoonstelling '84-24. 40 jaar Patronaat'  in de Janskerk in Haarlem zien ter ere van het 40-jarig bestaan van poppodium Patronaat. Aan de hand van foto's, anekdotes, affiches, film- en muziekfragmenten uit de afgelopen 40 jaar nemen we jee mee door de geschiedenis van dit iconische poppodium.

Sinds 1984 is Patronaat dé plek in Haarlem waar bands, muziek en dance hun publiek weten te vinden. Dit betekent dat er maar liefst 40 jaar aan bijzondere ervaringen en verhalen zijn van iedereen die hier ooit is geweest.In de tentoonstelling '84-24. 40 jaar Patronaat' maak je een trip down memory lane door beeld, geluid en archiefmateriaal van bezoekers, artiesten en (oud-)medewerkers. Ook is er muziek te beluisteren die ooit live in Patronaat te horen was. Bezoekers kunnen herinneringen ophalen en opnieuw de liefde en energie ervaren van de mensen die hun ziel en zaligheid hebben gegeven aan muziek. Je voelt hoe betrokkenen Patronaat ervoeren als een warm bad; een familie.

Door de jaren heen
In de tentoonstelling beleef je de ontwikkeling van Patronaat in tijdperken. Je ziet foto's van het oude Patronaat, dat startte in de gymzaal van de voormalige katholieke jongensschool aan de Haarlemse Zijlsingel. Wegens succes groeide het poppodium uit zijn voegen en was nieuwbouw nodig. Tijdens de verbouwing kon Patronaat terecht in de Fietsznfabriek aan de Oostvest. De foto's in de tentoonstelling brengen goed in beeld hoe Patronaat door de jaren heen is getransformeerd van een klein podium met 55 concerten met 12.000 bezoekers in 1984 tot één van Nederlands grootste poppodia met meer dan 500 evenementen en 165.000 bezoekers in 2023.
Naast de terugblikken op de optredens, artiesten en programmering, laat het Noord-Hollands Archief ook zien dat Patronaat een kweekschool voor talent is. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan zijn de Rob Acda Awards, die sinds 1996 jaarlijks worden gehouden. Het poppodium is vanaf het begin een plek waar honderden vrijwilligers zich vol overgave inzetten voor de muziek.

Het archief van Patronaat in beheer van het Noord-Hollands Archief
Dit jubileumjaar van Patronaat brengt nog een bijzonder moment met zich mee. Het archief wordt in beheer genomen door het Noord-Hollands Archief. Voor de samenstelling van de tentoonstelling putte het Noord-Hollands Archief hier veelvuldig uit. Niet alleen foto's, maar ook posters, video's, persoonlijke bezittingen en oude kaartjes zijn te zien naast mooie objecten.
Jolanda Beyer, directeur Patronaat, benadrukt het belang om het archief bij het Noord-Hollands Archief in beheer te nemen: “Haarlem is van oudsher een echte muziekstad met Patronaat als grote aanjager van de popcultuur, alles wat daaruit voortgekomen is verdient ook meer dan onze eigen stoffige zolder en de persoonlijke archieven van de omvangrijke Patro Familie. Echt fantastisch dat de rijke geschiedenis van Patronaat een mooie plek heeft gekregen bij het Noord-Hollands Archief. Daar wordt het niet alleen bewaard, maar ook nog eens gedeeld met publiek, een win-win zou ik zeggen!”
Patronaat is van onschatbare waarde gebleken voor de ontwikkeling van popmuziek in de regio Kennemerland en in het land. Willeke de Groot, directeur van het Noord-Hollands Archief, licht toe: “Muzikaal en organisatorisch talent kregen en krijgen hier de kans om op te treden en uit te proberen. Met het bewaren van het archief van Patronaat zijn de herinnering aan talloze optredens en belangrijke elementen van regionale en nationale popgeschiedenis veiliggesteld”.
