Basquiat & Warhol (Dutch spoken)
The performance Basquiat and Warhol, Black and White, or simply B&W, is based on the artistic collaboration between artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. This theatrical production explores the partnership between these two legendary pop art artists, both of whom were responsible for several iconic album covers.
From late 1979 to the summer of 1985, the two men maintained an intense artistic friendship, which serves as the foundation for the performance. As art icons, Basquiat and Warhol each left a lasting impact on modern art and the pop culture of the late twentieth century in their own unique ways. The men met against the backdrop of New York's thriving underground scene. At that time, Basquiat was a young, emerging artist, working mainly at night as a graffiti artist under the name SAMO, and would quickly rise to become a respected figure in the avant-garde art world. Andy Warhol, already established for over a decade as the godfather of the pop art movement, was going through a period of stagnation during this time.
Dramaturge Katja Hieminga and spoken word artist YMP (Mich Simon) use this story as a metaphor for their connection as friends and theater makers within the broader context of current intercultural transitions in the arts field. De voorstelling Basquiat en Warhol, black and white, kortweg B&W, is gebaseerd op de artistieke samenwerking tussen kunstenaars Jean-Michel Basquiat en Andy Warhol. Een theatervoorstelling over de samenwerking tussen deze twee legendarische pop-art kunstenaars die beide verantwoordelijk waren voor meerdere iconische platenhoezen. Vanaf eind 1979 tot de zomer van 1985 onderhielden beide mannen met elkaar een intense artistieke vriendschap, die het uitgangspunt vormt voor de voorstelling.
Basquiat en Warhol hebben als kunsticonen ieder op een totaal eigen manier een blijvende stempel gedrukt op de moderne kunst en de popcultuur van de laat twintigste eeuw. De mannen ontmoeten elkaar tegen de achtergrond van de bloeiende underground scene van New York. Basquiat is op dat moment een jonge, opkomende kunstenaar. Hij werkt als graffiti-artiest voornamelijk 's nachts op straat, onder de naam SAMO, en zal in korte tijd uitgroeien tot een gerespecteerd kunstenaar in de avant-garde kunstwereld. Andy Warhol is dan al ruim tien jaar een gevestigde naam als godfather van de pop art-beweging, maar maakt juist in die periode een impasse door.
