RE:CODE RE:CORD
Visit this expo as part of the Vinyl Alliance program on Saturday on Sunday at PHIL. Five artists from Germany, the USA and the UK, associated with the label Exile On Mainstream as musicians, designers, and artwork creators have taken the challenge and created a collection of unique art pieces by using different techniques, such as painting, carving, scratching, honing, collages, and cut-up.
Vinyl records have experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years, with many music enthusiasts drawn to the tactile experience and warm sound quality they offer. However, not every vinyl record is destined to play music forever. Some may become scratched, damaged, or simply outdated, making them unsuitable for their original purpose. Repurposing vinyl records has become a hot topic of discussion among vinyl lovers and industry representatives, mainly because the environmental impact of discarded vinyl records is a significant concern. One of the most popular ways to repurpose vinyl records is through art.
The unique shape and material make them an excellent canvas for creative expression. The approach taps into the cultural and nostalgic values they hold. For many people, records are more than just a medium for music—they are symbols of a particular era or personal memories. By transforming these records into new forms, individuals can preserve the sentimental value of the objects while giving them a new purpose. This process can be particularly meaningful when the records in question are no longer playable but still hold emotional significance.
The exhibition RE:CODE RE:CORD shall be perceived as a comment to the aforementioned topics. It shall focus on discerning the objects's special appearance, material, and shape while it's not a repurposing attempt. The records in this exhibition have been empty by default - pressed to become a canvas from the beginning and being created to represent a new purpose - re-coding our expectations and our approach. With them not containing grooves and music they represent an empty surface, the beginning of life as an artistic allegory to be filled with content, just like a record is carved with audio information, these blank records receive their narrative from the painting, collages and other techniques applied to them resulting in a unique piece of art.
Five artists from Germany, the USA and the UK, associated with the label Exile On Mainstream as musicians, designers, and artwork creators have taken the challenge and created a collection of unique art pieces by using different techniques, such as painting, carving, scratching, honing, collages, and cut-up. The exhibition will be presented in an immersive way with the records hanging from a structure resembling an air mobile. Visitors can walk among them, get close, or look at them from a distance and see them interacting with each other. This approach also resembles the creational process. In May 2024 all artists got together on a festival and started creating the first pieces. Some more got finished by them alone when they got home. Drawn from the inspiration of spending time together at a music festival where all of them played with their bands, with all its emotional whirlwind to be among like-minded folks the first attempts were an effort in collective presence and mutual inspiration. The work later was finished in isolation fine artists often find themselves. All the exhibits will now be connected and reconnected, forming an installation together which is characterized by movement and interaction. Just as art should be perceived.

Vinylplaten hebben de laatste jaren een hernieuwde populariteit gekend, waarbij veel muziekliefhebbers worden aangetrokken door de tactiele ervaring en warme geluidskwaliteit die ze bieden. Niet elke vinylplaat is echter bedoeld om muziek voor altijd te blijven afspelen. Sommige kunnen bekrast, beschadigd of simpelweg verouderd raken, waardoor ze niet meer geschikt zijn voor hun oorspronkelijke doel. Het herbestemmen van vinylplaten is een veelbesproken onderwerp onder vinylliefhebbers en vertegenwoordigers uit de industrie, voornamelijk vanwege de milieu-impact van weggegooide vinylplaten.
Een van de meest populaire manieren om vinylplaten een nieuwe bestemming te geven, is via kunst. De unieke vorm en het materiaal maken ze een uitstekend canvas voor creatieve expressie. Deze benadering speelt in op de culturele en nostalgische waarden die ze vertegenwoordigen. Voor veel mensen zijn platen meer dan alleen een medium voor muziek; ze zijn symbolen van een bepaald tijdperk of persoonlijke herinneringen. Door deze platen om te vormen tot nieuwe vormen kunnen individuen de sentimentele waarde van de objecten behouden, terwijl ze een nieuwe functie krijgen. Dit proces kan bijzonder betekenisvol zijn wanneer de platen in kwestie niet langer afspeelbaar zijn, maar nog steeds emotionele betekenis hebben.
De tentoonstelling RE:CODE RE:CORD kan worden gezien als een reactie op de bovenstaande onderwerpen. De focus ligt op het onderscheiden van de speciale uitstraling, het materiaal en de vorm van de objecten, zonder dat het een poging tot herbestemmen is. De platen in deze tentoonstelling zijn van nature leeg - vanaf het begin geperst om een canvas te vormen en gecreëerd om een nieuw doel te vertegenwoordigen - het hercoderen van onze verwachtingen en onze benadering. Aangezien ze geen groeven en muziek bevatten, vertegenwoordigen ze een lege oppervlakte, het begin van een leven als artistieke allegorie die gevuld moet worden met inhoud. Net zoals een plaat wordt gegraveerd met audio-informatie, krijgen deze lege platen hun verhaal van de schilderijen, collages en andere technieken die erop zijn aangebracht, wat resulteert in een uniek kunstwerk.
Vijf kunstenaars uit Duitsland, de VS en het VK, verbonden aan het label Exile On Mainstream als muzikanten, ontwerpers en kunstwerkmakers, hebben de uitdaging aangenomen en een collectie unieke kunststukken gecreëerd door verschillende technieken te gebruiken, zoals schilderen, graveren, krassen, slijpen, collages en knipwerk. De tentoonstelling zal op een meeslepende manier worden gepresenteerd, met de platen hangend aan een structuur die lijkt op een luchtmobiel. Bezoekers kunnen tussen de platen lopen, dichtbij komen of ze van een afstand bekijken en zien hoe ze met elkaar interageren. Deze benadering weerspiegelt ook het creatieproces. In mei 2024 kwamen alle kunstenaars samen op een festival en begonnen ze met het creëren van de eerste stukken. Sommige werden later alleen afgemaakt toen ze thuis waren. Geïnspireerd door de tijd die ze samen doorbrachten op een muziekfestival waar ze met hun bands speelden, en de emotionele werveling van het zijn onder gelijkgestemde mensen, waren de eerste pogingen een inspanning in collectieve aanwezigheid en wederzijdse inspiratie. Het werk werd later afgemaakt in de isolatie die fijne kunstenaars vaak ervaren. Alle tentoongestelde werken zullen nu met elkaar verbonden en opnieuw verbonden worden, wat resulteert in een installatie die wordt gekenmerkt door beweging en interactie. Precies zoals kunst moet worden ervaren.
