Sven Hammond Big Band plays Ray Charles
After the tremendous success of the very first theater tour of the Sven Hammond Big Band, organist and bandleader Sven Figee and his renowned orchestra are back by popular demand with the swinging and steaming program centered around the legend, The Genius, 'Brother Ray' Charles.
Expect his world hits such as 'Georgia', 'Hit The Road Jack', and 'Hallelujah', but also major hits from other artists and contemporaries that Brother Ray rearranged. Ray didn't have an easy life: he grew up in bitter poverty, became blind at a very young age, and struggled with various addictions. His fascinating life story is of course covered in this performance. 'Sven Hammond Big Band plays Ray Charles' is a musical theater show where you can't stay still and one you don't want to miss.
Sven Figee, leader of the Sven Hammond Big Band and a veteran of hundreds of live shows over the last 15 years, will be at the PHIL on Sunday to play a selection of tunes from his vast record collection. Through a selection of the tracks that have inspired him over the years, he will offer insight into why these songs are so important to him, explain how the various pieces changed his idea of what music could be, and reveal some surprisingly eclectic sources of inspiration.
