Jean Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child

A tribute to the controversial and much-troubled artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, created by his friend Tamra Davis.

Basquiat broke through with his concise, bebop-influenced art in a world dominated by minimalism. As a successful Black artist, he frequently encountered racism and misunderstanding. We delve deeper into Basquiat's world through interviews, archival footage, and, most importantly, his own words and work. Director Tamra Davis pays homage to her late friend with this film, celebrating not only his status as an artist but also as an iconoclast.

We are screening this film during the Haarlem Vinyl Festival, following the theatrical performance Basquiat and Warhol, which is based on the artistic collaboration between artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol.

Hommage aan de spraakmakende en veelgeplaagde kunstenaar Jean-Michel Basquiat, gemaakt door zijn vriendin Tamra Davis. Regisseur Tamra Davis brengt met deze film een eerbetoon aan haar overleden vriend, zijn status als artiest maar zeker ook als iconoclast.

Basquiat brak met zijn beknopte, door bebop beïnvloede kunst door in een wereld waarin minimalisme de dienst uitmaakt. Als succesvolle Zwarte artiest kreeg hij veel we maken met racisme en onbegrip. We duiken dieper in Basquiats wereld met interview, archiefbeelden en vooral zijn eigen woorden en werk. De Schuur draait deze film tijdens Haarlem Vinyl Festival, aansluitend op de theatervoorstelling B&W, gebaseerd op de artistieke samenwerking tussen kunstenaars Jean-Michel Basquiat en Andy Warhol.
