Joost Swarte on Vinyl
During the second edition of the Haarlem Vinyl Festival, artist Joost Swarte will exhibit eighteen of his album cover designs. The collection is complemented by a selection of posters for music festivals, which he also designed. The exhibition will be on display daily from Friday, September 27th, in the café of the Schuur and is free to attend.
Multitalented Joost Swarte (1947) has had an impressive career as a (comic) artist, graphic designer, and architect. He started his own comic magazine, illustrated covers for magazines like The New Yorker, founded a publishing house, and was responsible for the design of the Schuur building. In addition to being an internationally renowned artist and graphic designer, Joost is also a passionate music lover, using his talent to create numerous album covers. This work will be showcased during the Haarlem Vinyl Festival in the café of the Schuur.
The selection of album covers dates back to 1971, starting with the first cover he designed for Mr. Albert Show, the trendiest band in Eindhoven in the 1970s. In 1990, he designed a cover for Carel Kraaijenhof's Tango Cuatro. More recently, he created covers for Gallowstreet and his music project with Fay Lovsky: Jopo in Mono XL. Joost also designed many posters for music festivals such as Twist et Scooter (Geneva), Rencontres Trans Musicales (Rennes), Musique de Traverses (Reims), Nancy Jazz Pulsations (Nancy), North Sea Jazz (The Hague), and several editions of Bevrijdingspop (Haarlem).
The prints of album covers and posters will be on display daily from Friday, September 27th, in the café of Haarlem's Schuur, with free admission. On Saturday, September 28th, at 4:00 PM, we will have a conversation with Joost Swarte himself in the Schuur café about his collection, and he will share some of his favorite vinyl records with us live.
After the Haarlem Vinyl Festival, the exhibition will remain on view for several weeks.

Tijdens de tweede editie van het Haarlem Vinyl Festival exposeert tekenaar Joost Swarte achttien van zijn ontwerpen voor platenhoezen. De collectie is aangevuld met een selectie van affiches voor muziekfestivals waar hij eveneens de ontwerpen voor maakte. De tentoonstelling is vanaf vrijdag 27 september dagelijks te zien in het café van de Schuur en is gratis toegankelijk.
Multitalent Joost Swarte (1947) heeft een indrukwekkende carrière als (strip)tekenaar, grafisch ontwerper en architect. Hij begon zijn eigen striptijdschrift, tekende magazine-covers (The New Yorker), startte een uitgeverij en was verantwoordelijk voor het ontwerp van het gebouw van de Schuur. Naast internationaal vermaard tekenaar en grafisch ontwerper is Joost ook een gepassioneerd muziekliefhebber en zette hij zijn talent ook in om een veelvoud aan hoezen voor elpees te tekenen. Dat werk is tijdens het Haarlem Vinyl Festival te zien in het café van de Schuur.
De selectie van albumhoezen gaat terug tot 1971, de eerste was voor de Mr. Albert Show, de hipste band uit Eindhoven in de jaren '70. De afdrukken van platenhoezen en affiches zijn vanaf vrijdag 27 september dagelijks te zien in het café van de Haarlemse Schuur, de entree is gratis. Op zaterdag 28 september om 16:00 uur gaan we met Joost Swarte zelf in gesprek in het schuurcafé over zijn collectie en laat hij ons enkele van zijn favoriete vinylplaten live horen.
Na afloop van het Haarlem Vinyl Festival is de tentoonstelling nog enkele weken te zien.
